The sleeping bag market spans a staggering price range — from $40 rectangles of polyester stuffing that live in garage sale bins to $800 ultralight down masterpieces that weigh less than a bottle of wine. The question of whether that price gap is justified is one of the most reliably argued topics in camping culture, and the honest answer — the one that actually helps you make a decision — depends entirely on what kind of camping you do, how often you do it, and what matters most to you when you're horizontal in the dark at altitude.

Fill power is the single most important number in a down sleeping bag. It measures how much space one ounce of down occupies — the higher the fill power, the more air a given weight of down traps, and the warmer and lighter the bag. A 550-fill bag needs significantly more down to reach the same warmth rating as an 800-fill bag, which means it's heavier, bulkier, and harder to compress. A 900-fill bag achieves the same warmth rating with dramatically less down, making it lighter and smaller than almost anything else you can buy.

Cheap bags almost universally use synthetic insulation or low-grade down in the 450–550 fill power range. Premium bags use 800–900 fill power down, which is why they pack to the size of a Nalgene and cost four times as much. For car campers who drive to their site and carry the bag fifteen feet from the trunk to the tent: fill power is almost irrelevant. For backpackers carrying everything on their back for five days: it's everything.
